Where Will My RV Winter Travel Destination Be

RV living gives me the flexibility to go where it is warm in the winter. How to decide where my RV winter travel destination will be is difficult. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great dilemma to have, but a dilemma all the same. There are so many places I want to see. How do I decide?

While ruling out the entire northern half of North America, that still leaves me with a lot of choices. The southern and western states have a lot to offer. Alabama has a special draw for me. The monkeys I have not yet found in Ocala National Forest in Florida, and wanting to see the Louisiana Bayou on an airboat are just a few things on my bucket list. Then you add a great party at the end of February with your friends, which is happening in Las Vegas, and that pulls me in a whole new direction.

See my dilemma???

Come along as I explore the opportunities.

Warning: Zigzagging is highly likely!

South for my RV Winter Destination

I am currently in the Midwest, visiting friends. Going south from here would bring me to Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. To the right a little is Mississippi, Louisiana, the Bayou and New Orleans. To the left a little, Georgia.

Tennessee

Tennessee is a beautiful state, but parts of it can be cold in the winter. I have been to Tennessee a few times and had a wonderful experience every time. The people and the accent are warm and friendly, and the scenery is breathtaking.

My first solo “social tour” since my 30-year marriage was at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. I took the Angel Share tour, thinking I would need a good stiff drink after this. I will share with you that I was a tad nervous. Firsts are always hard. The host was warm and welcoming. Ok, the handsome and Tennessee accent charm did not hurt either. Lol. The story is fascinating, and the 90-minute tour is enjoyable.  The angel they shared that day was more than drips of whiskey from the barrel.

Alabama

I always have fun in Alabama. I mean off-the-cuff, out-of-nowhere fun. The scenery is beautiful, and I found a small island I can not wait to go back to. I have mentioned Jackson Lake Island a few times in my blogs. The beauty and sound of the river and the calmness of the aura of that island have me going back there in my mind time and again. It will have to be a must-stop no matter which way I turn this trip.

Georgia

If I am zigzagging my way to Florida, just to the left is Georgia and my friends Jim and Jill. The last time I went through Georgia, we met at the Marietta Diner for dinner. It’s an old-fashioned steel diner with a touch of Greek. What a great meal and wonderful company. I will bet you will have to get the cheesecake to go. Lol.

Mississippi

Mississippi, known for its blues and the mighty Mississippi River. Crossing Mississippi, I am sure I will have to find a Mississippi River boat to ride on. Even though the Mississippi River is the third largest river in the US and covers many states from Minnesota on down to the gulf, I still think a Riverboat ride would be the best in Mississippi.

Louisiana

Louisiana has always been a draw for me, but I have never been there. I have been through there but have not had the opportunity to visit. It is a place where I see pictures, and I just want to feel that. The mist rising over the Bayou and the thrill and magic of New Orleans. I have always wanted to take an airboat ride. What a perfect way to see the beauty of the Louisiana Bayou.

Florida

A large state with a plethora of things to do and see. I also have many friends in Florida, so I know it will be a fun time. I love the Ocala area. The people are so very friendly and the scenery spectacular. With the beauty of the Ocala National Forest and the allure of seeing a wild monkey, Florida would be a fun place to spend my RV winter travel destination.

West for my RV Winter Travel Destination

Driving straight west would be a winter wonderland all the way there. The best thing to do would be to go south to Alabama and then turn right. Staying south would lead me through Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Oh, what a trip that would be.

Texas

Texas is a huge state with an abundance of things to see and do. Of course, the Alamo would be on my list as well as the Marfa Lights. A phenomenon off Highway 67 where strange lights are said to illuminate on the side of the highway. What could they be? Would I be lucky enough to see them?

Waco Texas is known for a horrendous act that occurred there but also for the fossilized woolly mammoths. There are 16 of those pre-historic beasts preserved for all to see at Baylor University. How cool is that!! Of course, a must-see would also be the Cadillac Ranch.

New Mexico

New Mexico is the home of Roswell. It is famous for its UFO crash in 1947. Aliens abound in Roswell, and it would be a must visit for sure. I could explore the caves of Carlsbad, which have been described as the Grand Canyon but with a roof. I do not usually go underground, but I would make an exception to see something like that. The dunes of white sand at White Sand National Monument would be a sight to behold. You can even rent a sled and slide down the dunes. Made of pure gypsum, these dunes only exist here.

Arizona

I have spent some time in Arizona. A beautiful state filled with interesting history and magnificent landscapes. Tombstone is a place I have been before and would definitely go again. What a fun town that takes you all the way back to OK Corral. With stories of the wild west and a walk through boot hill, you expect to see John Wayne around every corner.

I find it fascinating seeing the line between where the city ends and the desert starts. It is a definite line. Lol. I saw my first wild horse in Arizona, and of course, a visit to the Grand Canyon would be a must-see.

Nevada

When you think of Nevada, Las Vegas is probably the first place that comes to mind. Although I have been to Nevada, I never had a chance to explore it. Get ready for a shocker. I have never been to Las Vegas. Lol. I tell that to people, and of all the places I have been, they always think Las Vegas would be one of them.

My vanning friends are holding Council of Councils there. This means a party, a party, throw in a meeting to talk about vanning events and back to the party. Playing with my friends is one of my greatest joys and is often the destination for many of my tours. I think it would be fun to walk the strip and see the lights. Maybe even go to a show. I am not much of a gambler or a city girl, and Las Vegas probably would not be on my list if my friends were not there.

There is also the Hoover Dam, which I have never seen, and Red Rock Canyon, where you can see cliffs of red sandstones as tall as 3,000 feet. Camping in the Valley of Fire or seeing the geyser at Fly Ranch would be an incredible experience.

A Zag to the Right

Right next door is California and a bucket list destination. I have always wanted to see the giant redwood trees in the forests of California. A definite zag on my western trip would have to be made.

So you see my dilemma? Decisions, decisions. What direction do you think I should take? Is there something spectacular I must see when I am in one of those states? Let me know in the comments.

  1. If you head west out of Texas on I 40, at the first exit in New Mexico is Russell’s truck stop. Its a 50s diner with a car and toy museum inside, along with the usual store. Great authentic diner food! Then head southwest to Roswell, but be sure to fill up your gas before you leave the interstate!

  2. Big dilemmas! If you go to CA consider the desert: Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. A direct shot on the 10 from AZ! If you do Las Vegas, make sure to add a Gordon Ramsey restaurant to your list! The food in general there is pretty amazing.

    1. It is, isn’t it. Lol, I have heard about Joshua Tree. That place sounds amazing. I did not know about Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant. How cool. I will stop in for a meal. Thanks Daphne!

  3. If you make it to see the redwoods in CA (Sequoia Nat’l Park) would highly recommend making the extra leg to Kings Canyon. There’s a little hotel run by the park at the end, but assume you can park as well. If in summer, you can do a lovely horseback ride as well! Bon voyages!
