My Winter RV Travel Roadtrip: New Mexico

My Winter RV Travel adventure took me through the state of New Mexico. Famous for the aliens of Roswell, I discovered there is so much more to New Mexico. Come along and enjoy the beauty and mystery of New Mexico.

Roswell, New Mexico

Welcome to the land of UFO’s, aliens, and the stories that surround them. It all started in 1947 when a farmer found debris in his fields. Looking at the strange looking material that was on the ground, it was nothing he had seen before. Metallic sticks and foils and a heavy paper thin material were strewn throughout his sheep pasture. He called the sheriff’s office to report this strange find. The sheriff also did not know what it could be, he called the Roswell Air Force Base.

It is told that immediately, air force personnel came out to the farm and quickly gathered all the materials and took them back to base. The town folk were curious to what the debris could have been and why the air force whisked it away so quickly. Rumors began that it was a UFO. Later, the air force released a press statement that it was a weather balloon. People did not believe them as those who saw the debris, and the pictures of it in the newspaper had never seen material such as that.

People were convinced that it was an UFO.

The Alien town of Roswell was born.

Everything about Roswell is alien. At Dunkin Donuts, you are greeted by aliens. Coffee and aliens are a great way to start your day in Roswell. There are alien signs everywhere in Roswell, where even the street lights are alien.

A must-see in Roswell is the International UFO Museum and Research Center. For as little as $7.00 for an adult ticket, you can discover alien stories and facts from around the world. Within the museum, you will find a timeline of the Roswell event, along with alien exhibits of experiments carried out on aliens as well as movies about aliens, such as Orsen Wells, War of the World’s.

What is like to be abducted by an alien? Read stories from people who have had that experience.

The Palenque Astronaut

The Mayan people have always had a mystical representation.  The Palenque Astronaut is a carving on the lid of King Pakal tomb, who ruled the Mayan people for 68 years and was buried in the Temple of Inscriptions upon his death in August of 683.  An architect by trade he designed and was responsible for some of the most treasured Mayan Inscriptions and monuments.

Discovered in 1948, a replica is displayed in the UFO Museum and Research Center. The wooden replica took three years to build, with five artists working on it. Its intricate design and story that is laid out before you will keep you focused on this beautiful piece of history for more than just a minute.

Just a note. The Mayan people were known to be small in stature. When King Pakal’s tomb was opened, the being inside the tomb was well over five feet tall (5′ 10) and would have towered over his people. Is the king really buried there, or as the lid of the tomb suggests, an astronaut from another planet? The question lingers, and we may never really know.

Do you believe in aliens? You may after a visit to this alien realm.

The Picturesque Scenery of New Mexico

The vast beauty that New Mexico holds is both awe-inspiring and breathtaking. Roads that looked like they would take you into forever and history that dotted the landscape will keep your head turning. Even the rest areas are filled with beauty and history.

When visiting someplace new, I love to stay at the state parks. Bottomless Lake State Park had both history and beauty. As you drove into the park on a winding scenic road, you could not help but stop and take in the beauty.

When I reached the campground, I was delighted to find a little history as well. This beautiful park was New Mexico’s first State Park, established in 1933. Cowboys tried to measure the lakes and could find no bottom. Today’s geologists know that the “lakes” are actually sinkholes of collapsed salt and gypsum deposits. An old tower sits on the site to remind us of days gone by.

Bluewater State Park

Bluewater State Park has its own special guests. As I drove into the park, I noticed a group of wild ponies in the field beside the entrance. As I drove forward, a pony lead the way. I knew this was going to be a great stay.

After finding a campsite complete with power for $14.00, I settled in for a peaceful night. In the morning, as I was sipping my coffee, some unexpected guests decided to walk on by. The ponies came for coffee! Yea! They are absolutely beautiful animals, and it was amazing to see them up close.

New Mexico was an amazing place to visit and I will be sure to make a few stops again on my next RV Travel adventure that way.
